| PLEASURE WARNING: Cigarette smoke contains pleasureable substances. |
Update:
I'm doing archive updates twice a week right now and you can track changes by going to this page (link also available right off of the Cigarette Advertising Archive main page):
It's amazing how many advertisements are out there and I'll be concentrating on 1965 to the present. Hopefully after a while, I'll be able to open it up to allow others to add to the collection.
All images are originally scanned in 300 dpi, saved in TIFF format and then post processed with Adobe Photoshop Elements. I attempt to straighten and then crop out the distorted areas due to the magazine binding contour hitting the glass of the scanner. I also combine two page ads and then I resize down so that a normal page is 1920 across. Two page ads are double width. And then finally, they're saved as high quality jpegs. When you first view an image, you see it scaled down such that the longest width is just 1024. To view it at it's native resolution, at the top where the description is, you can select its full size. Just right click the image in your browser to save it locally.
The Archive is also text searchable; look at the bottom of any page when viewing the archive.

Original Text:
Today, I have released the Beta version of the Cigarette Advertising Archive and I hope people find it useful in their own private studies. There are many archives on the web and this one aims to provide:
1. High quality images at high resolution.
2. Completely text search-able.
3. Comprehensive survey of cigarette advertising throughout the years.
It will take many years to fully populate the site, but new images will be added as often as possible.
Please leave your comments and suggestions below.
To see the archive, select it at your left, 5th one down, or click here: New Cigarette Advertising Archive in Beta
