PLEASURE WARNING: Smoking is addictive; once you feel the pleasure you may never want to stop.

Maybe smoking is not so bad for us after all?

I just came across this book and wanted to share it with you. Good reading to get a more balanced view on the effects of tobacco on health.

Even most of the members of this group seem to accept that the health risks from smoking cigarettes are great, and I suggest spending some time on this site. This was put out by an independent person (not an agent of the tobacco industry) and he spent seven years analyzing the studies into tobacco to determine whether tobacco really is as bad as it is made out to be. The conclusion of the book might be that smoking is not harmful as the antis suggest.

What does everyone think?

Maybe smoking is not so bad

We are a family, 3 generations of smokers. The oldest is well into their 60s and the youngest is in middle teens. No one in our family currently has or has ever died from lung problems from smoking. We are quite into water sports and my grand daughter, who is probably the heaviest smoker, can swim under water for over 2 minutes on one breath, I have smoked for over 50 years and can do the same. I have a friend that is 73 years old, has smoked since teen age, hikes in the country, can swim underwater for a minute and 20 seconds, and breaths just fine (I might add that she is a very small person with very small lungs). I have another friend that is in mid 40s, has smoked since age 11, recently saw her run 3 blocks and then smoke a cigerette while she caught her breath inhaling deep each drag. I have another friend in her 60s that has emphasima that she claims is from smoking for over 40 years, she also told me that she was born with lung problems and has had trouble breathing her whole life. I think it was the lung problems and not the smoking that caused the emphasima. In conclusion, there are probably some people that should not smoke, if you have good lungs like the rest of us, smoke and enjoy it!

smoking is good

I will be blunt here, starting smoking is the best thing I have ever done, with nicotine being one of the best anti depressants it has kept me on a even keel, yes there is health risks but everything you do can harm you. The best thing is when you are a bit stressed having a cigarette helps calm you down, just taking 5 minutes to relax and fill the lungs

smoking doesnt change who and what a person is it just changes their life, for me it has been for the better, okay it costs a fair bit of money but a lot less than alcohol and it is certainly a lot less damaging than alcohol. You make time in the day to smoke and for me it is the small things, like if I am buying a new jacket I make sure there is pockets for my cigarettes and lighter, I make sure I have plenty cigarettes to last me if I am out and if i am in the company of other smokers I will smoke more. I just wish I could meet the woman again that encouraged and helped me start, suffice to say I would give her a big smokey kiss as thanks and I hope she is still smoking and loving it as much as me.

I still think it is great to see so many young people taking up the habit,, getting addicted and enjoying it, seeing a 20something girl in leather reach into her jacket pocket for cigarettes and lighter before filling her lungs gives me satisfaction that the antis arent winning and the next generation is still becoming smokers

Exaggerated? Sure. Entirely false? Nope.

Smoking is definitely not healthy for you, but if you live an otherwise healthy life, then I gotta be honest... you'll probably be okay. Being obese or very overweight is worse for you than smoking, so really, if you can just be active and eat okay, cigarettes should be the least of your concern.

However, I also must take a definite stance against heavy smoking (> 1 pack per day). I think this is an abnormal behavior in the same way I think eating fast food for every meal is abnormal. People should try to limit their consumption to half a pack per day at most. It's universally agreed that a vice in moderation is hardly a vice at all, and I think the same applies with smoking.

The primary exaggerations are the risk of lung cancer. In truth, your risk of lung cancer is still REALLY low as a smoker. It's 1% for non-smokers and 8% for smokers, with the actual number probably being a tad lower.

I dunno, maybe it's just me,

I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I've noticed my allergies/mild asthma have all but disappeared since I started smoking. I've only been smoking on average a few a day. I know this might sound ridiculous, but I am 100% serious. I did a quick search on Google and found a study from a few years ago saying cigarette smoking can prevent allergies. It's really crazy, because I've always had a horrible allergies to the extent breathing could become difficult. I've been on medication for it for a long time, but have stopped taking it after I started smoking when I discovered the problem cleared. And this was right during the core of ragweed season when it would usually be flaring up. Idk if maybe this has something to do with the fact that my mom used to be a fairly heavy smoker when I was little so I was often exposed to secondhand smoke. I know my allergies developed a few years after she quit. Whatever the cause, this has been a very nice bonus for me. This may be hard to believe, especially to the anti-smoking crowd, but there is at least one study that supports what I have personally observed.

Dulling the sensitivity.

I've never had allergies of any type, but one thing I've heard is that cigarette smoke can dull the sensitivity of cilia, the hairy little guys in all your breathing passages. I've heard a lot of similar stories about people with asthma and allergies having difficulty in the presence of secondhand smoke, but that smoking firsthand actually helped. Maybe it's because the cilia are already too weak to do their job, or have reactions to allergens. In that case, dulling them altogether might be beneficial. I'm no doctor, but yours isn't the first story of this type I've heard.

re allergies

i was the same with hayfever in the summer, used to be on an inhalor from april to september. When i started smoking i didnt need my inhalor as the smoke cleared my tubes, even now I rarely have to take anti-histamines in the summer. I used to know this female that at one time had really bad asthma but when she started smoking in her mid 40's the asthma cleared up

as for heavy smoking then it is up to the person, I would never critisise anyone for being a heavy smoker, if you want to and can afford to smoke 2ppd then great, I am fortunate that I am still a light smoker at about 10 a day and have been all my life, there has been times I have deliberately tried to smoke more but I cant, my body is happy at that level, possibly because I inhale really deep and hold until I exhale very little i can get the nicotine and tar out of 10 that most need 20 to get. if I could afford it and my body would accept it then i would love to be a 2ppd smoker but i cant see either happening. just enjoy smoking as I said it is far better than alcohol

Everything in Moderation

I believe in enjoying life to its fullest and always trying new things. Having said that, I'm glad I was introduced to smoking by a university friend of mine years ago. I also believe that everything should be done in moderation and although I do live a healthy lifestyle, I've always held on to my cigarettes as it's one of the many pleasures in life I enjoy. The decision to continue smoking and not quitting (something I'll never do) meant that I would have to cut back my smoking from a pack a day when I first started right down to around 5 per day. It wasn't easy but over time I managed and this has been my limit for the last four years. My body has become used to it and I don't crave any more than my usual 5 or so per day. For myself, smoking has not limited me in any way and I'm in pristine health so yes I do believe that the risks of smoking are somewhat overblown. Love it and will always love it.....

Nice awesome!!

Nice awesome!!

I Agree

Despite all the science proving that it is bad for you etc. , people who smoke are indirectly more healthy than non-smokers. Nicotine is a poison and because smokers allways have nicotine in their blood their immune systems are constantly active, and often detects and neutralizes a virus quick enough before it can make you sick.
