Should Congress ban flavored cigarettes including menthol?

I am an avid nonsmoker, but

I am an avid nonsmoker, but the government is trying to take over our lives. We need to fight them.
Defund government!

So tired of the Gov

I agree entirely. They will take advantage of the people, and if we allow it we will lose what little rights we have left.

DEFUND GOVERNMENT!

government trying to tell us what to do..

I think this is all crazy..The state keeps raising prices of cigarettes thinking its gonna get people to quit, but the only thing its doing is taking more of our money for the state.. Thats not right. People have addictions(if thats what you want to call it) but it shouldnt have to kill our pockets,we have enough bills to pay...I think the state is crazy to raise prices and then try to tell us their going to stop making menthol... Thats crazier.....The state should just leave the people alone and let us enjoy our menthol cigarettes...Its our lives and our lungs...Let us enjoy ourselves....

menthol is unnecessary and

menthol is unnecessary and destructive. causes you to cough blood. all bad. and the polls agree with me.

Thats not true they use

Thats not true they use menthol in medicines all the time. Menthol smokers lung function declines at rates similar to nonmenthol smokers and they have similar rates of smoking related illness. Menthol does increase nicotine absorption but nicotine itself is not harmful.

Menthies

Cigarettes are Cigarettes, If they ban menthols and flavored, they are banning em all. I do not smoke menthols under any circumstances, not even when Im drunk. But I dont like the gov't trying to step in and look out for anyting that involves civil liberites. They need to keep on letting us smokers smoke and the non-smokers complain. I think the government should probably focus on more pressing matters like the economy or the million other things actually wrong with the damn country. We really are governed by bureaucratic idiots.

I'm not sure its the proper

I'm not sure its the proper job of government in a democracy to even have an opinion about what people should or shouldn't be smoking! As the slogan goes: " 'Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms' - it should be the name of a convenience store, not a federal agency"

i think there sick with

i think there sick with power! y the hell would u ban a flavor!

Govt. interfering with smoking

The worst thing is, the regulatory attack on smoking pleasure is totally out of the hands of Congress now! It has been turned over to the "police" powers of the executive branch, in the form of the FDA drug regulators. Congress will only wade back in now if there is a MAJOR uproar, and, unfortunately, the 20-25% of us who still pursue the pleasure of smoking can have precious little impact (eg: if African Americans ALONE had been resisting racism in this country, we NEVER would have advanced beyond where we were; only when a MAJOR number of non-black people joined in the civil rights movement did it begin to gain traction); unlike racially based civil rights, or even gender-preference civil rights, I doubt we smokers will ever be able to excite a significant number of non-smokers to really join us in resisting the goverments attack on our pleasant pastime. We are truly a discriminated-against minority!!
BUT, out right banning (of almost anything in this day and age) by the government WILL be resisted mightily by the populace as a whole...for good reason. So expect the screws to be slowly tightened on whatever aspects they think can curtail the appeal of smoking without an outright ban!

NO!

I love to smoke menthol cigarettes. I want Congress to stay out of my life, and let me enjoy smoking. Amy

Reasons

The reason why flavored cigs are banned is because they encourage younger kids to start smoking. A 12 year old might be put off by the taste of plain tobacco but may like cherry or something else that's sweet. I don't agree with taking away rights but at the same time the idea is to protect kids (who will get addicted much easier and will have a harder time quitting and probably don't understand the possible dangers of smoking yet). I think it's worth banning if it helps kids make better decisions. Perhaps they can make them legal but tax them (with proceeds going to youth awareness) so much that kids won't be tempted to get them.
Banning menthols stems from the fact that the numbing affect of menthols make people smoke more, increasing cancer rates. Black men generally smoke more menthols than any other group, and also have the highest amount of lung cancer due to smoking above-average amount of cigarettes a day. Of course it's personal choice and I don't agree with them being banned but there is a rationale behind it.

freedom

love cloves or menthol from time to time, bourbon dip cherry dip... why ban something that has been around for yrs... teen smoking lets face it cig use is actually less then pot so what are you proving you can curb useof a legal substance but can't do anything about illicit drugs.
