| PLEASURE WARNING: Smoking is addictive; once you feel the pleasure you may never want to stop. |
I have just quit smoking because I want to get in shape because I have a low self confidence I guess. I'm not fat or anything but just not in good shape. I guess i quit smoking because I felt like it was the easiest way to get over my problems because of the immense pleasure and sense of relaxation it gave me. I would like to do both so if theres a way to smoke and work out from anyone with experiance and not have the lack of breath I would love to hear about it because I miss my addiction
Smoking and working out
I smoke, though not heavily (less than 1/2 ppd), and I also regularly workout. I do not want to justify smoking here and dismiss the fact that there is a reduced lung efficiency with smoking. There is. But there is no reason why a smoker can't workout and workout vigorously. Yesterday I rode a stationary bicycle at 100 rpm for about 20 minutes and went roughly 7+ miles. It was a hard workout and I was drenched in sweat. Afterward I enjoyed a cigarette. Today I ran 3 miles without stopping. i am no competitive athlete, but I do enjoy my workouts and I also enjoy smoking. I think if you are going to smoke, you should get some cardiovascular exercise to provide some positive counter affect to smoking. Besides, it makes smoking even better! However, if you smoke and have not been getting any exercise, I would recommend the same thing as I would to a non-smoker...start slow. IT takes time to build up muscular and cardiovascular capacity, whether you smoke or not. Initially you will be out of breath. But taxing your system is good for you.
If you are using smoking to deal with your problems, you should quit and face your problems. Smoking will not solve them. However, it does provide a wonderful means of thinking about them and considering possible solutions. But don't use your problems as an excuse to smoke.
Ultimately it is a personal decision. If you think the best thing for you is to quit and get more exercise, that is probably the best thing for you right now.

If you don't work out at
If you don't work out at all, and you begin, you're going to be feeling it no matter who you are (smoker or non-smoker). Everyone gets out of breath.
Be sure you're starting your work-out routine on the right level for a beginner. Stay with it, and you can keep smoking.
I'm completely lazy when it comes to working out, so this is just my thoughts on the subject. I don't really have much experience, but it sounds good, right?
Smoking Works with Work Outs
My wife works out 90 minutes a day 5 days a week and smokes 1/2 ppd of Marlboro Lights. She has never complained about smoking hurting her workouts and loves that first cigarette after she is done in the gym. She also looks great when she smokes. :)
Our Smoking Rules
My girlfriend and I are smokers and are both in great shape. Our rule is no more than 5-7 cigarettes per day and it works for us. We're at the gym 5-6 days a week and she is actually a personal trainer and teaches spinning classes. Her favourite time of the day to have a cigarette is after her spinning class and is often joined by a few other women in her class. Many of the women she trains are smokers and there is often the discussion of quitting but she basically tells them to keep working out and smoke only 5-7 per day. I just came back from the gym and ran into a woman she trains and she fired up a B&H 100's. We chatted for a bit and she was really enjoying that cigarette taking in deep drags and her exhales seemed to go on forever!
Girlfriend smokes and works out
My girlfriend works out regularly and is a smoker. She recently started smoking regularly as she enjoys having a cigarette and was getting cravings. She still feels fit and cant wait to light up a cigarette when she leaves the gym. When i meet her outside the gym she always has a cigarette in her hand and although she inhales her cigarette smoke deep inside her she still has a rigourous work out.
This is an interesting
This is an interesting thread. I am a runner and I have just started experimenting with smoking recently. I did a 5.5 mile run on Thursday and felt fine.
At the moment I don't smoke every day. I'm thinking that I am probably not doing that much damage (yet!)
Request for a study!
I wish that someone would do a study on smokers who are physically active compared to smokers who are not physically active. I refer to heart-pumping, heavy breathing, rigorous exercise. What affect does physical activity have on the body of a smoker? What risks are minimized or reduced due to physical activity? Is there any difference at all. Maybe there is a study out there already. Anybody know of one?
I exercise regularly and I
I exercise regularly and I have been smoking now for about 2 months. Last night I ran 6.5 miles. I do Yoga pretty much every day. I haven't noticed any ill effects from smoking as yet. I only tend to smoke 2 - 4 cigarettes per day.
I've been doing a bit of research on the internet. Some people actually say that being fit makes them a better smoker - their increased lung capacity means they can inhale more! I certainly find that I can take really huge inhales and I don't cough or anything!
Also I've read about some Chinese distance runners who light up just after finishing a race! LOL.
The study did take place, gotta find it next time
And yes, exercise is good for a smoker's lungs, slowing the rate at which lung disease progresses...
It makes you cough up the dirty pleghm more often, reducing toxin exposure :D
Have fun!

I really enjoy cycling. I
I really enjoy cycling. I have several bikes and typically do anywhere between 15-20 miles per day. I am also a ppd smoker. I actually think that working out allows me to inhale that wonderful smoke even deeper inside my body. There is nothing that calms me down more than when I hop off my road bike and immeadiately light a cigarette. Ahhhhh.....
Biking and smoking
I just completed a 300 mile ride through some serious mountains. It was a great trip. I smoked up till the trip but did not smoke during the ride. I really missed it, but did not find the smoking to affect riding up hills/mountains for miles and miles. This was really hard riding, but the downhills were awesome. Honestly, I did not find that smoking had any affect on being able to do this. When I got back, the first thing I did was go out a buy a carton and start smoking again. IT was good and still is.
It think the message unfortunate that smokers can only be sedentary and unfit. This just does not need to be true. Smokers can exercise vigoroursly and enjoy the benefits of regular exercise. And it is true, exercise makes smoking better. Nothing like that cigarette after a hard workout drenched in sweat! I did it today after a three mile run.
Cycling
I agree. I'm an avid cyclist and can do challenging things like hill-climbs although I've been smoking for nearly 30 years.
True story: I did a 100-mile ride for charity a couple of years ago. I didn't smoke on the ride but took my cigarettes with me. At the end of the ride the organizers had a party going to celebrate the accomplishment, with food, beer and a band. After grabbing a Sam Adams, I went off to the side and lit up a celebratory cigarette. One of the best I've ever had due to the combination of hard exercise and nicotine deprivation :-).
A woman came up to me and said, "you can't smoke!" I replied that we were outside and I didn't see any signs saying I couldn't. She said no that's not what she meant, rather that I "couldn't" be a smoker and also ride 100 miles. I had to state the obvious, which was that I just did AND had smoked continuously for many years. She walked off spluttering. My friend (an easygoing non-smoker) thought the whole exchange was hilarious.
Also, don't forget...
... eating right is important, regardless of your smoking habits. If your diet includes lots of fatty foods, not enough fruits and vegetables, too many carbs, etc., you may find any sort of physical activity a challenge. It's a reality that smoking contributes to risks of cardiovascular health, and watching carbs, fats, and cholesterol can be a help to anyone.
If you choose to smoke, you really should consider every other potential risk factor and combat those as much as possible.
Swimming and smoking
One of the fastest ways to build your lungs up is swimming, especially swimming under water holding your breath. I have smoked a pack a day for a lot of years. At the first of summer when we first open the pool up I can just barly swim the length of the pool under water on one breath, by the end of summer I can do two and a half lengts on one breath. Aslo the better shape your lungs are in the more you can enjoy smoking. There is nothing like the feeling of inhaling a big drag deep in your lungs right after a good work out in the pool. I know that this works because a have a female friend that has smoked a pack or more a day for over 50 years and also loves the water. She is a very small person (under 5 feet tall and thin with small lungs) and can aslo swim the length of the pool on one breath and can hold her breath under water for over a minute and 20 seconds the first of summer. I would probably be in better shape if I had never smoked, but really enjoy smoking and I think the key is to keep in shape and keep your lungs in shape and just keep smoking.
Smoking and overall good health
The other day I happen to be sitting in my car outside our local tobacco store waiting for another store to open. As I sat there I watched many people go in to purchase cigarettes. I was saddened to see how many looked unhealthy. This was not so much from smoking as it appeared to be from an overall unhealthy lifestyle.
I hope this website can contribute to an attitude that smoking in moderation can be part of an overall healthy lifestyle. Smokers do not have to be unfit. Let's be among those who choose to smoke because we enjoy it while also enjoying the benefits of regular exercise, a good diet and drinking lots of water. We can do this!
Yay!
I love running. I also love a smoke straight after but feel guilty when I do, Like I have somehow ruined all of that hard work. it's god to see so many other smokers who are fit. I've only been smoking for while and I hope it doesn't start to effect my performance. I'm not sure what I would give up if it came to running or fagging! I love both!
Hm
Think about another thing... Enlisted servicemen? There are PLENTY of Army, Marine, and Navy soldiers who love nothing more than lighting up a smoke... And they are REQUIRED to be in perfectly fit condition! If they can do it, you can, if you're not weak. Otherwise, enjoy smoking and not being able to run past a few hundred yards. You can do anything you set your mind to... However, I would advise a smoker to go PAST the limits of a non-smoker, as there is a lot you must counter-act when it comes to cardio exercise, or strength training in general. Think about it in a mathematical sense. Running is +10, finishing a workout is +5, however, smoking is -15 for overall health. It'd be wise to add an extra 5 or 10 by pushing your body to it's absolute limit, or "overclocking" yourself, you dig? See you around, space cowboys.
Competitive running / cycling
I've been doing competitive sports like cycling, running, and xc skiing for 15 years. I also like to light up, but I really feel my performance slowing down big time if I smoke. Usually I smoke 5 to 10 Lucky Strike Reds a day during off season but then quit when I'm getting close to competitions. I've been thinking about quitting competitive sports and getting a motorbike though. This way I could smoke as much as I feel like and still have fun riding. Yet to decide...
No contradiction
Indeed I run regularly and I am a smoker. In fact I love to chain a couple of cigarettes after my run. It just adds to the pleasure even more. Several good runners I know are even heavier smokers than I am (I only average 7 a day while they are a ppd type), and they assured me that it has no negative effect on them, only positive ones.
