Had a collapsed lung but tempted to start again

Hi there

So I used to smoke and really enjoyed my cigarettes, smoking pretty much everyday for about 2 years. I started on Mayfair, then L&B, then Sterling and finally settled on Marlboro reds. In August this year however, I had a pneumothorax (collapsed lung) and was hospitalised for days. I've been advised by all doctors to never smoke again but I'm very tempted. Should I give in? Will my lung survive just a few cigarettes or is it too risky?

What do y'all think?

Thanks :)

I think it depends if they

I think it depends if they have been successful in re-sticking the lung so that it is fully functional. My brother had one collapse but they were able to restore it to full function. He still smokes. I had one after I quit smoking, as a result of an injury, and it was not diagnosed immediately. They were able to only get about 60% of it functional again. I no longer am tempted to smoke as it is hard enough walking up a flight of stairs.

Remember

There’s no such thing as “just a few cigarettes.” If you had been smoking for two years before, the moment you light up even a single cigarette, your brain will interpret it as your decision to become a regular smoker again.

I’d say given your special circumstances, you’re better off not to start smoking again.

In your case, better off not re-starting

I don't know if you smoked for a period of time before you started "smoking pretty much everyday for about 2 years", but your lung condition could be genetic or associated with a very bad viral infection. No matter how much you love smoking, it is important to be able to breathe. Since you are now a "dormant smoker", when you try "just a few cigarettes" you are likely to ramp quickly back up to your former smoking level. Vaping will also cause lung irritation in a situation like yours.

I don't know if using snus would be an option. Those who use snus often report that it's even more addictive than cigarettes. Snus does have health risks and you might familiarize yourself with them. It is something to consider.
